Nació en Dordrecht, Netherlands. Hijo de un próspero comerciante de Dorchester. Recibió clases de pintura, antes de trasladarse a Amsterdam donde estuvo durante aproximadamente 3 años en el taller de Rembandt del que aprendió el estilo Barroco. Hacia 1653 volvió a Dordrecht donde se casó y se establecio. Es pintor de escenas domésticas (mujeres hilando, leyendo la biblia, escuchando a hurtadillas, tejiendo o cocinando). Hacia 1673 se instaló de nuevo en Amsterdam donde se volcó en pintar retratos olvidándose de esas escenas populares llenas de encanto e intimidad. Su producción fue muy amplia y tuvo gran exito en vida con sus retratos.

Dutch painter. A native of Dordrecht, Netch . He went to Amsterdam to study with Rembrandt, from whom he learned the Baroque style. Before his return to Dordrecht in 1653 he painted a few life-size Rembrandtesque genre scenes. From 1655 to 1660 he painted smaller domestic scenes, usually of women spinning, eavesdropping, reading the Bible, or cooking. In 1673 he moved permanently to Amsterdam and devoted himself to portraiture, abandoning intimacy and the deep glowing colours characteristic of Rembrandt for elegance and cooler tones reminiscent of Anthony Van Dyck. He was a prolific painter, and he achieved great success with his portraits.
